    Exploring Robotics: Unit 7 - FTC Redesign
    Standard 1: STCO.06.03.a Demonstrate the design process by defining a problem, brainstorming, researching and generating ideas, identifying criteria and specifying constraints, and exploring possibilities.
    Standard 2: STCO.06.03.b Select an approach, develop a design proposal, make a model or prototype, test and evaluate the design using specifications, refine the design, create or make it, and communicate processes and results.
    Standard 3: STCO.07.03.b Demonstrate the ability to collaborate and work effectively
    with others.
    STCO.07.03.c Use teamwork and leadership skills effectively.
    Standard 4: ITPR.03 Produce (code) a computer application to demonstrate proficiency in developing an application using the appropriate programming language.
    Knowledge (what do you want them to be able to KNOW at the end of the unit):
    • Students will be able to apply the engineering design process.
    • Students will be able to build and modify Tetrix robots based on their design
    • Students will be able to troubleshoot problems and modify their robot to improve success with the challenge
    Skills (what do you want them to BE ABLE TO DO at the end of the unit):
    Building:
    • Students will be able to construct a two-motor LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot capable of picking up balls, loading goals, and parking goals, per the FTC Cascade Effect Challenge.
    Programming:
    • Students will be able to use the Motor Control VI for movement and stopping.
    • Students will be able to use the Wait for Time VI for controlling timing.
    • Students will be able to program servos and motors to complete the above tasks
    Essential Question(s):
    How does the Engineering Design Process facilitate modifications?
    Why do a robot’s design and program need to be synchronized to work together?
    Key words/vocab:
    engineering design process: a guideline that engineers follow to ensure that their product is designed efficiently and effectively
    autonomous period: a 30-second period where robots are operated via pre-programmed instructions only.
    teleop period: a 2-minute period where robots are driver controlled.
    major and minor penalties: (various responses per Cascade Effect Game Manual)
    Students are expected to familiarize themselves with all vocabulary in the Game Manual and ask for help with any unclear rules or concepts
    WICOR Strategies:
    Collaboration - Students will work in small, collaborative groups to complete all the tasks
    Inquiry - Students will identify, brainstorm, and solve a problem
    Organization - students will share plans, calendars, and agendas with Google-drive.
    Unit Performance Assessment:
    1. FIRST Tech Challenge Rules Exam: multiple choice, short answer, vocabulary, design/drawing
    2. FIRST Tech Challenge Competition: in-class round-robin tournament based on 2014-15 FTC Rules
    Formative Assessments (daily/weekly):
    1. Engineering notebook/Google Drive plans and timelines
    2. Writing prompts/discussions
    3. Exit tickets
